
Every artist is self-trained. My formal art training is sketchy: a few years
as a child prodigy at California School of Fine Arts, a brief period under
Wayne Thiebaud at age 16, and individual studies in Europe between 1981 and
1988...
The real art training was doing kids' portrait sketches at school fairs
to raise money for various schools. The kids would become bored and run away
before I was finished. Forcing myself to draw speedily was the most serious
training of my art career. The joy I could deliver to a proud mother with a
good drawing of her child was so much more rewarding.
When the angels began
sitting for their portraits, there were no end of places to exhibit, but more
